Calves

Calving Season

Mid-May through Early July

The busiest and most exciting time of year around the farm.  The pitter patter of little hooves, and the stare downs from protective Mama's rule the day.

Calves are around 30lbs at birth and can grow up to 2lbs per day.

Masters of Camouflage

Born to Hide & Survive

New born elk calves are born covered in spots, which help them to blend into their surroundings and remain hidden from predators.

The yearly scavenger hunt to locate invisible calves &  tag them for ID purposes, while dodging their protective Mamas, is exciting to say the least.

Learning to Elk

Big Personalities in Little Bodies

Within one hour of birth the calves are standing to nurse & taking small, slow steps as they learn to use their long, shaky legs.  Within a couple of days their speed rivals that of a cheetah.  Through communication with their Mamas & mimicking the behaviours they witness, the calves quickly learn how to be active herd members.

Elk Mamas

A Force to be Reckoned With!

The instinct to protect their young is strong & they will stop at nothing if a threat comes between they & their calf.  Elk cows are incredible mothers, tending to, teaching & feeding their young.  Watching the Mother/Calf relationship develop into a lifelong bond is amazing.
