With their big antlers, the bulls get all the attention, but the cows are every bit as important. They carry, birth, feed and raise those bulls when they are calves. Without the cows, there would be no big majestic bulls!

Elk Cow Facts

Mature cows average 550 to 600 pounds, stand 4' to 5' at the shoulder

Females need to weigh at least 430 lbs in order to go through estrus

They do not grow antlers.

They are very good & highly protective mothers, giving birth during May & June

Cows typically only birth one calf at a time. Twins occur in less than 1% of elk pregnancies.

They communicate with their calves & each other by making a "chirp" sound, sometimes referred to as a "mew"
